Imagine spending eternity orbiting Mars – a final frontier journey – for the price of a car!
That's right, a US company is offering a truly out-of-this-world memorial service: sending human remains and DNA into orbit around the Red Planet. Celestis, a Texas-based firm with a history of space burials, has opened reservations for its Mars300 mission, slated to launch no earlier than 2030.
For a surprisingly accessible $24,995 (approximately Dh91,806), you can secure a spot, with a 10% deposit. But here's where it gets interesting: the company emphasizes limited capacity, and all funds are held securely until the launch details are finalized.
Celestis has already launched ashes and tributes into Earth orbit, including memorials for cultural icons. But Mars300 is a monumental leap, aiming to be the first to place human remains around another planet.
The mission will hitch a ride as a secondary payload on a cargo spacecraft headed to Mars. Currently, SpaceX's Starship is the only potential launch vehicle. The launch date hinges on technical readiness, finances, and logistics.
Celestis's CEO, Charles Chafer, calls this "The next step in humanity’s journey to the stars," blending science, symbolism, and deep-space exploration.
But here's where it gets controversial... This mission isn't without its challenges. Any spacecraft carrying human biological material must adhere to strict planetary protection protocols to prevent contamination of celestial bodies. This will heavily influence the mission's engineering and approval process.
