Get ready for a revolutionary shift in how we interact with our computers! Microsoft is on a mission to make AI the new norm, transforming our PCs into intelligent assistants that respond to our voice commands.
In a bold move, Microsoft is bidding adieu to Windows 10 and gearing up for the 40-year anniversary of its operating system. Yusuf Mehdi, a key executive at Microsoft, envisions a future where AI is seamlessly integrated into our daily experiences, and they're not stopping at chatbots. They want to rewrite the entire Windows operating system around AI, creating what they call the "AI PC."
But here's where it gets controversial... Microsoft believes that people will embrace talking to their computers, with Copilot taking the lead. "You should be able to talk to your PC and have it understand you," says Mehdi. With Copilot's Voice and Vision capabilities, Microsoft aims to make this a reality, introducing a new wake word, "Hey, Copilot!"
Microsoft has a history of trying to convince users to adopt voice assistants, like Cortana on Windows 10. But this time, they're confident that AI will change our behavior and make talking to PCs the new normal. "All the data shows people love using voice," Mehdi asserts, pointing to the billions of minutes spent talking in Microsoft Teams meetings.
However, not everyone is convinced. While voice commands can enhance accessibility and provide app assistance, many may find the idea of talking to their computer strange. "Doctors use it for transcriptions during exams, and people use it for searching, but will the general public embrace it?" questions Mehdi.
For AI to control a PC, it needs access to what's on the screen. Microsoft has been testing Copilot Vision, a feature that scans your screen and provides guidance or answers questions about photos and documents. Copilot Vision is now available worldwide, offering help with apps, troubleshooting, and even step-by-step guidance in games.
The next step is Copilot Actions, where Microsoft's AI assistant can perform tasks on a local PC, like editing photos. Microsoft is cautiously testing these actions, aware of potential mistakes an AI agent might make. "We're committed to learning from how people use it and improving the experience," says Navjot Virk, corporate vice president of Windows Experiences.
Copilot Actions operates in a secure, contained environment on the Windows desktop, using an AI agent to complete tasks. You can watch it work in the background, listing all the steps it takes.
Microsoft is also integrating Copilot into the Windows taskbar, providing one-click access to Copilot Vision and Voice features, along with a new integrated search experience.
After the Recall incident last year, Microsoft faces an uphill battle to regain trust for its Copilot features. But they're not backing down. The company plans to run TV ads with the tagline "meet the computer you can talk to," promoting Windows 11 PCs as the future of computing.
As Windows 10 support ends, Microsoft is encouraging users to upgrade, promising a PC experience that's more than just a tool - it's a partner.
