On Wednesday, the Newark Liberty International Airport's air traffic control facility faced a two-hour staffing shortage, marking the latest in a series of such incidents. This facility was the only one to report a 'staffing trigger' for the morning shift, according to the FAA's operations plan.
The reason for the shortage remains unclear, but the Department of Transportation noted an uptick in sick calls from air traffic controllers since the shutdown began. This is a concerning development, as staff shortages can lead to significant delays and potential safety risks.
The FAA has tools to manage airspace and reroute flights, but sometimes delays are necessary to maintain safety. This was evident earlier this year when the facility handling flights approaching Newark experienced staffing issues and subsequent delays after radar and communication failures.

Nick Daniels, President of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, stated, "Air traffic controllers are dedicated to their duty, but they don't control the shutdown." He added, "Politicians start and end shutdowns, and their actions directly affect the safety of our skies."
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the next paycheck for controllers will only cover hours worked before the shutdown. The situation reached a critical point on Monday when Hollywood Burbank Airport's tower closed due to a complete no-show of controllers, forcing flights to use a common communication frequency, typically reserved for smaller airports. Delays were significant.
